Succession
Jess Cockerill
June - August 2017
In ecology, ‘succession’ describes the way communities change and evolve as time passes, in a direction towards a ‘climax community’ – a state of stability, that remains unchanging, at least for a time. However, a climax community cannot stand still forever, and outside influences can introduce new challenges to an ecosystem’s stability and its inhabitants. Nevertheless, living things are resilient. They can find new ways to survive and even thrive through change, always working towards a stable state of being, even if it can only be attained for a short while.
Jess Cockerill is an artist/illustrator who lives between Mandurah and Perth. Her work explores the relationship between bodies and their environments through hand-drawn visual narratives.
